I always enjoyed art as a child and had a few influential teachers throughout my schooling that led me to my career choice as an art teacher. I studied Visual Arts Education at Malone University and graduated from there in 2004. Later I received my Masters of Science degree in Integrating Technology into the Classroom from Walden University in 2010.
I believe that arts can empower students through a process of freedom of creation. Previous to teaching at Perry, I taught in Field Local Schools near Kent, Ohio. While there I taught elementary art for four years before taking a leap of faith and becoming the visual arts teacher at a brand new school established through a grant called The Falcon Academy of Creative Arts. At FACA students learned through an arts based curriculum that integrated visual art, music and movement into their core subject areas such as math, reading, science and language arts. My journey at FACA was a wonderful one and can be viewed on my old blog at www.facaartroom.blogspot.com. My decision to leave FACA was a difficult one, but Perry is a great place to educate students!
I love being a part of Perry because it is just a round the corner from where I grew up and where my family is. Perry has wonderful resources for educating children, an energetic and selfless staff, great administrators and students that are respectful and hard-working. I can't wait to see what I can expose my "Perry Picassos" to throughout my time here!
Inside the classroom I love to explore new art media with my students and because of my masters degree I believe strongly in instructing through 21st century techniques using technology. I want my students to be prepared to go and contribute to the world by being innovative and creative doers!
Not only do I believe that art is an outlet, a freeing experience, a time to let one's imagination soar, an explorative journey and a time to grow with little inhibition, I also feel it is a way of life. A true teacher (and artist) never stops learning, or experimenting, or growing and that is why in the summer months when I am not engaging in planning lessons and projects for my students, you can often find me in my studio. I am a true painter at heart, working currently in abstract and encaustic media for a business I founded with my business partner called I Now Pronounce U Paintings LLC. You can view our work at www.inowpronounceupaintings.com or follow our business page on Facebook.
And lastly, but definitely not least-- my family. I am completely blessed with a wonderful husband, also a teacher, and our beautiful son Grady born in 2010. Life would be incomplete without these two guys and I can't say enough about how much richer my life is because of them.
I am so excited to be in Perry and so excited to teach your children! Please free to contact me anytime!
